If you can present your website as an unbiased resource designed to refer visitor’s to another website without you appearing to gain anything, then the visitor will be more likely to buy. Why should they help you line your pockets? By hiding your affiliate url- also known as a masked frame redirect - you improve your chances of closing more affiliate sales.

Further to this, visitor’s will be more likely to reccomend your site to other visitor’s if it appears unbiased- which will result in an increase of traffic.

Setup time is minimal for a php script- normally the only thing that needs changing is the chmod- this can be done via the website C Panel or via any basic ftp software.

Stolen commisions have become a big problem- commision thieve’s have developed tactics to override your hoplink with their own- effectively stealing your commission at the point of purchase. Affiliate cloaking software effectively hides your affiliate url from would be commision thieve’s, and furthermore presents your site as an unbiased referrer with nothing to gain.

To demonstrate the difference between Link Hijacking and Link Bypassing I will explain in the context of ClickBank.

Link Hijacking: The visitor clicks your ClickBank affiliate link and they are directed to the merchant’s sale’s page. The visitor realises they are at an affiliate page, and they replace the hoplink with that of their own in the adress bar- ensuring the commision is paid to them instead of yourself. This obviously only occurs when the visitor is a member of the affiliate program.

Link Bypassing: The visitor clicks your ClickBank affiliate link and they are directed to the merchant’s sale’s page. The visitor realises the address looks funny- your affiliate hoplink is at the end of the adress. They chop off your hoplink and press enter- redirecting them to the original merchant’s sales page.

If you take the example of ClickBank, everytime a visitor clicks on an affiliate link on your website they are directed to the merchant’s sales page via the ClickBank Server. The ClickBank server writes a cookie to the visitor’s machine, which if they purchase you are credited with the commision. Affiliate cloaking allows the affiliate to hide their clickbank hoplink from the visitor, thus presenting themselves as an unbiased reccomendation. It has been proven that someone is more likely to buy if they believe the website will not gain from their purchase.
